The Walkway that links the Metrolink and Merrallec Hall is solar powered with solar panels that face the sun. The way the solar powered street lights work is with the photovoltaic cell that "collects the sun's energy during the day and stores it in a rechargeable gel cell battery." The LED light is automatically turned on when the controller senses that there no longer is sunlight. The energy needed for a standard incandescent bulbs (assuming 25,000 hours life) is approximately 1,500 kilowatt hours whereas an LED light uses 280 kwH. And the fact that these street lamps use much of the natural solar power, it is a positive change in university campuses in US.
