With the current bulding dating back to 1838, St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church is the oldest Roman Catholic church in NYC and NY State. The congregation was established in 1785 by an Irish priest just a year after repeal of the law barring priests from entering the state (the Roman Catholic Church was not permitted to function in NY during the Dutch and British colonial periods). The initial two hundred members were ethnically mixed, although largely Irish; thus being of great importance to Irish heritage in New York City.

The historic research contained in this Open Green Map is from the book: Six Heritage Tours of the Lower East Side by Ruth Limmer, in collaboration with NYC's Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
