Herrera School is a Dual Language K-8 specializing in Fine Arts.
In order to mitigate the sound from nearby Sky Harbor Airport (5th busiest airport in the USA), the school was earth bermed and the basketball courts and other play areas are now on the roof. Berming the building with earth not only insulates it from sound but also from extremes in temperature.
AZ Homegrown Solutions won an Urban Forestry grant in 2009 that will place 8 large native trees along the south end of the property to shade the bus drop-off area.
