The Table Bay Nature Reserve consists of seven management sections, including Rietvlei, Zoarvlei, Milnerton Lagoon, Milnerton Racecourse, Diep River, Parklands Fynbos Corridor, and the Coastal Section. It covers about 880 hectares of diverse habitats ranging from riverine floodplains, permanent and seasonal wetlands, open pans, a tidal estuary and coastal dunes.

Zoarvlei Wetlands are situated between the Paarden Eiland Industrial Centre and the suburbs of Rugby and Brooklyn. Most of the 140 ha of wetland is a dense mat of tall reeds, with a small stretch of open water near Brooklyn Chest Hospital. Here, 87 plant species and many birds are protected, and a great
many water birds and gulls congregate. The open water can be reached along a sandy path from Donegal Road, Rugby – look out for giant molehills, a selection of spring flowers and many annual flowers.

The Table Bay Nature Reserve protects over 400 plant species, 12 of which are threatened including Cliffortia ericifolia, Hermannia procumbens sp. procumbens, Leucadendron levisanus and Acrolophia bolusii.

The Table Bay Nature Reserve has approximately 200 bird species, including large flocks of flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus), as well as numerous migrating wading birds. During spring and summer, migrant birds arrive from the northern hemisphere, such as the curlew sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) that travels 13 000 km to arrive at this reserve.
