Meseritz Synagogue
Descripción
The building housing the Meseritz Synagogue was built in 1910 as a residential dwelling. Soon after it was built, the building was converted into an Orthodox synagogue by immigrants from the city of Meseritch in Poland.
The Meseritz Synagogue, which has an extremely beautiful neo-classical facade,as well as a beautiful interior with balconies and stained glass windows, was built on a very narrow urban lot. Known as the last operating "tenement synagogue" in the East Village, groups such as the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation (GVSHP) have lobbied to have the building declared a landmark so the synagogue would be preserved.
