Most Holy Redeemer Roman Catholic Church
Descripción
Most Holy Redeemer, with St. Nicolas, was one of the two principal Catholic churches in the German community. Unlike the churches in America, the church in Germany played a different role in 19th century public life. The latter rarely connected with the community's secular concerns or religious beliefs with public issues. Therefore, most German catholic beliefs were superficial. But, churches still existed to serve that non-secular part of the community.
The German churches played an important role in terms of education. For parents who were not satisfied with the nontraditional educational system of school at that time, the churches often provided "spare-the-rod-and-spoil-the-child education." At Most Holy Redeemer, the teachers were "men of solid, genuinely Catholic character. Old-fashioned instructors, they demanded obedience and order from the pupils inside the schoolroom and outside."
