10年ほど前から、カシノナガキクイムシという体長5mmほどの小さな甲虫が木を枯らす菌を運んで、京都の北部、東山山系ではミズナラを、南部ではツブラジイやコナラなどブナ科の木々がたくさんやられています。10年前から観察を続け、京都市に対策をするよう、警告を続けてきた「北山の自然と文化をまもる会」の榊原さんは、「やっと最近になって報道されるようになったが、報道には一部誤りも多い」と指摘している。山の手入れが悪く木が大きくなってしまったからというより、地球温暖化の影響が大きいと彼は見ているようだ。
