Montclair Cooperative School
Descripción
The Montclair Cooperative School is a cooperative school for students from nursery age to 8th grade. It was founded in 1963 when Mary Meager, new to Montclair, wanted to start an interracial, nonsectarian, cooperative nursery school. It was originally located at the First Congregational Church on South Fullerton Avenue. The school moved to its current site in 1983 and now has approximately 170 students.
Originally built as the Chestnut Street School in 1890, it was needed to relieve the over-crowded schools caused by the growth in population north of Bloomfield Avenue in the 1880’s. Later in 1917 it was named the Rand School. In 1930 it was used as the Essex County Vocational School.
This building is listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
