Every year, 27 billion gallons of untreated sewage of released into the waters of NYC. Due to the state of the the city's outdated sewer system, every time it rains more than 5 minutes, the city's 460 combined sewage overflows pump out what comes straight from the sewer. This mix of household waste and storm water inhibits the complete recovery of our harbor's health!
These CSO's are an ugly fact of life in NYC. The Dept. of Environment protection is trying to solve the problem, but its a big system, so it takes time create solution. You can be a small part of that by visiting these sewage outfalls and assessing them with a photograph and your comments.
