First Presbyterian Church
Overview
Gothic Revival Style
Built in 1892, this one-story church is uncharacteristically simple compared to the Central Baptist Church diagonally opposite and other church buildings along the Monmouth Shore. The major design elements are on offset square tower at one corner with a very steep pyramidal roof, a steeply pitched and gabled main roof, and pointed head stained glass windows. The windows are two bay asymmetrical by four bay.
The front portico with Tuscan order columns was added later. John J. Wells was the mason, and John H. Geary the builder. The two-story frame manse building facing Highlands Avenue was built in 1897 and connected to the church sometime after 1907. The original reed bell weighing 1,100 pounds still summons worshipers to service.
