Despite its charming look — rows of ornate, prewar Chinese shophouses in punchy pastels fronted by palm trees — the Duxton Hill neighborhood in Singapore has a sordid past peppered with hostess bars, gambling dens and police raids. Now, after being deemed a conservation area by city authorities, the area, on the outskirts of Chinatown, has been reborn as a hip enclave better known for its indie culture and fine dining than raucous bachelor parties. Duxton Hill’s tranquil, pedestrian-friendly streets make for an easy afternoon stroll among independent shops and cafes or an evening choosing from Singapore’s latest culinary experiments, with options ranging from Spanish tapas to Russian delicacies to modern Singaporean, or Mod Sin, cuisine.

Duxton Hill in the daytime is a fine example of traditional shophouse architecture and a good place for a stroll. In the evening, you can enjoy dining at the increasing number of fine restaurants, while surrounded by karaoke joints and lively bars overflowing with very friendly ladies from around the region.
