Better Waverly Youth Sculpture Garden
Overview
The Better Waverly Youth Sculpture Garden is a public artspace designed by children and youth. The land was acquired through the city's "adopt-a-lot" program, reclaiming a site on which four rowhouses had burned down. Children designed and built a mosaic pond and several cement sculptures. They have worked with Parks & People to plant flowers and trees. An artist in the MACA/MICA program donated a bench. It's community work in progress.

Impacts
A related site not yet listed on the map is the Better Waverly Community Arts Center located at 901 Montpelier Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.
The Better Waverly Community Arts Center (BWCAC) provides a safe, creative, and empowering space for Better Waverly youth to express themselves, and develop as artists and community leaders. The art center is an integral part of our community's ongoing efforts to build a safer, stronger and more vibrant neighborhood.
Currently, the center hosts free classes after school in music, visual art, and dance. Additionally, it is a place to develop and refine life skills, build relationships, receive mentorship and learn about opportunities available throughout the city via ArT.linK.
Look for a rotating display of our youth’s artwork on display in our Window Gallery.
Current and ongoing activities are posted on the front door. Stop by or call 410.366.2252 for more information on classes, workshops, lessons, community projects or events.
I like that the sculpture garden has a bench to sit on. I also like that it is an open space for us to have cookout and parties at.
At the ribbon cutting of the sculpture garden I had the chance to sing in front of a live audience. I sang "Patience" from Dreamgirls.
Before we built the sculpture garden with Ms. Alex it was nothing but overgrown grass and a burned out brick house but now it's beautiful!
The Better Waverly Community Sculpture Garden was designed and built by neighborhood youth under the direction of artist Alex Roberts on the reclaimed lots of 808-814 Homestead St.
