New York Aquarium
Overview
The New York Aquarium is the oldest operating aquarium in the United States. It used to be located in Battery Park in Manhattan, but now has its home in Coney Island, Brooklyn right on the boardwalk.
It is managed by the WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and it boasts more than 350 species of wildlife. Its main purpose is to raise awareness about issues facing the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.
During Hurricane Sandy, the aquarium sustained severe damage and due to the power outages. Unfortunately many species were not able to survive; since then the New York Aquarium has reopened.
