This area in orange is the Indian "maize land" that is mentioned in the land grant to Frederick Lubbertsen in 1640. This was a planting ground for the Indian village named Werpos.
The spot at Smith and Bergen streets is the site for a proposed heritage Three Sisters garden (corn, beans & squash). For more about this project you can visit: http://www.brooklynmaize.org
