Access to library and information resources is critical for social upliftment. It is a sad irony, then, that in poorer areas facilities are often lacking, compounding barriers to education and employment. In Khayelitsha, the Harare Library, funded largely by the Carnegie Foundation, opens the opportunity for educational, recreational and social development. The library includes a gaming room, SmartCape computers and an early childhood development centre, and forms part of the City’s ground-breaking Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) initiative.
