Schmeeckle Reserve, UWSP
Overview
Schmeeckle Reserve - Schmeeckle Reserve is a 275-acre natural area on the campus of UW-Stevens Point. The Reserve occupies 2/3 of the UWSP campus and is open to the public. The Reserve was created to protect and restore native ecological communities, serve as an outdoor classroom for students and teachers, and provide recreational opportunities to all visitors.
Visitors in the Reserve can witness many of Wisconsin’s valued species and natural resources, including cattails, marshes, prairies with wild flowers, rustic beaches, towering oak trees, white- tailed deer, red, fox, and gray squirrels, flying squirrels, foxes, weasels, a wide range of native frogs and toads, Canadian geese, mallard ducks, and a rainbow of butterflies and songbirds. Within the Reserve is the 24 acre Lake Jonas, which is perfect for fishing, canoeing, wildlife watching, or relaxing. The visitor center on North Point Drive has restrooms, a drinking fountain, a gift shop, an exhibit hall that chronicles the history of conservation in Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.
