Davius: Wildflower Island Project
Overview
The 'Island Project' is surrounded by several roads which commuters walk, cycle and drive in a busy city centre area.
At the turn of the century when the planting was initiated, this green land island suffered from a great deal of litter problems, human excrement, people continually breaking and scattering branches and rubbish around the grounds which made the overall appearance very undesirable and passers-by were just not enticed to sit on this potentially beautiful green space.
Over a ten year period: By digging over soils, improving soil properties with composting and adding indigenous Wildflowers (from the Davius Nursery Project) the compacted brown soils began to breathe new life; this green space now looks more pleasing and in recent years the locals, students, commuters etc. have taken time to sit and enjoy this lovely little green space.
We can all improve our local green spaces and support biodiversity in the process. What can you do?
