Plum Brook Preserve and Trail
Size: 88 acres

Preserve & Trail Information: The Plum Brook Preserve contains a mixture of mature upland forest, cedar groves, and meadows that support a diverse group of plants and animals, including NJ State threatened and endangered species. Along the trail, nineteenth century stone walls mark the boundaries of old pastures and fields. The Plum Brook is a tributary of Wickecheoke Creek, one of the highest quality waterways in the state, as defined by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection.

History: The Plum Brook property was preserved in 2011 through a partnership between D&R Greenway Land Trust, the Central Jersey Beagle Club, NJ Water Supply Authority, Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres Program. The property has been managed by the Central Jersey Beagle Club since the 1960s for beagle field trials, which require early-successional grass and shrub habitat. Early-successional habitat is critical for many species of birds and small mammals, and is increasingly rare in the landscape as forest disturbance (e.g., fire and timber harvest) is reduced.

Location: Delaware Township, Hunterdon County.

Directions: From County Route 523, turn northward onto Ferry Road. Proceed on Ferry Road about a mile and three-quarters to a driveway on the left that is marked as the Beagle Club entrance. Proceed up driveway to the club headquarters and parking
