This library was built with funds left by Andrew Carnegie. It was completed in 1909 and is said to have been the most heavily used branch in the system from the 1920s to the 1940s. It was open 18 hours a day, from 6AM to 1AM, six days a week.
The need for such hours is marked by two constants: 1. Tenement apartments were small, crowded, and noisy, and 2. Few families had the money to expend on the serious student's necessary reference books 3.
