The Josephine Mill initially operated during the mid 1800s, but a century later it lay in a sad state of disrepair. Today, the Cape Town Historical Society has completely restored this precious Cape icon to full operation, and the fine iron waterwheel once again supplies the local community with freshly milled, stone ground flour. The Mill endeavours to foster respect for tradition, community, and the environment with its holistic approach to natural living.

The Josephine Mill Museum houses displays of recovered artifacts from the area, as well as an exhibition of the stone milling process. The Mill Shop provides wholesome natural and organic products to visitors and the surrounding community. Josephine Mill stone ground flour is freshly milled on site from the highest quality locally grown wheat and sold in reusable hemp sacks. The shop also supplies a range of freshly baked breads and homemade jams and condiments.

The Caveau Wine Bar and Deli is set in the tranquil Mill gardens on the edge of the Liesbeek River. The restaurant offers award winning fresh fare and is renowned for its cellar and Cape wine. The Josephine Mill is also the meeting place for Green Drinks and Transition Town meet-ups in the southern suburbs.
