The Blue Hills Reservoir on Chickatawbut Road in Quincy was constructed in the 1950s and was removed from active service in 1981 due to contamination from birds and other animals. It is currently used as a non-potable emergency supply.

To meet DEP safe drinking water regulations, the Metropolitan Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is currently constructing two 10 million-gallon drinking water storage tanks to be buried on the site (http://www.mwra.state.ma.us/01news/2007/012907bluehills.htm).

The MWRA argues that these tanks are critical to its Southern High water service area, which would be served by the proposed covered tanks. Friends of the Blue Hills, a nonprofit environmental organization that opposes the project, argues that the permanent loss of over 8 acres of protected wetlands in the Blue Hills Reservation is unacceptable without proper mitigation (http://www.friendsofthebluehills.org/BHreservoir.htm).
