Cardiff County Council adopted ‘Wild About Cardiff’ (Cardiff ’s Local Biodiversity Action Plan) in November 2001. It is being implemented with the expert help and advice of The Cardiff Biodiversity Action Forum. This is a working group of representatives from over fifty different conservation-minded organisations, which meets three times a year.
Cardiff has a wide variety of habitats, which support a large number of important species. Of particular interest are the Cardiff Beech Woods, which are among the most westerly in the UK and a cSAC.
Three rivers run through Cardiff, all of which support otters. The dormouse and the stag beetle have also been found in Cardiff recently.
Projects which have come out of the LBAP include the creation and restoration of ponds along with raising awareness of this habitat through involving the public in pond and amphibian surveys.
