Suggestion: Color code icon headings text in Legend to correlate with icon coloration on map.
Sustainable Living - blue
Nature - Green
Culture & Society - red-orange
Make a stronger connection between map and legend
Thanks Janet for this suggestion. We tweaked the design of the sidebars - how can we improve them without a complete redesign? Comments, and feedback welcome! Wendy

or even just color coding the little drop-down arrows that expand each heading to show icons. Something!
Too many bubbles. I again strenuously suggest that you eliminate the one that directs you to "Use the legend to filter the icons." That instruction must appear at the top of the icon legend BEFORE the categories. That is the logical place. Otherwise you are requiring the eye to flit in too many directions.
Until the bubble on the left can accurately depict the # of sites actually shown, I suggest it be retired. Looks terrible to have over 60 icons showing on the screen and have the bubble say "22 icons shown. Click to view more." Destroys confidence in accuracy of site.
Furthermore, I want other maps in my area to show at bottom of this legend, not under info tab. If i have thematic maps up, I want them obvious from that first window. I am considering making some thematic (i.e. pre-filtered) maps drawing from the Regional Map that shows over 300 sites and can be overwhelming. I miss being able to insert a customized message at top of map. A one-sentence statement of purpose immediately below the map title and location.
PLEASE! This seems like a simple color change code that could make a huge difference in site navigation. My comment is now almost 3 months old and I hear about this from users frequently.
I agree about the bubbles. I myself actually didn't even read what the filter one said. I always click quickly to remove the bubbles, especially the "how many sites' one which isn't useful. Also agree with other requests above.
AND would really like the icon representing the site to show up in the thumbnail Google map in the individual site page- or eliminate the thumbnail all together. The way it shows up now is pretty confusing and useless as it doesn't actually mark the exact location. I had a difficult time understanding the thumbnail map for my own business location, so can't imagine it helping someone else. Is the Green Map icon supposed to be marking the location? Why can't it be an interactive Google map like other websites provide for individual listings?
We're working on this in March 2010!
