May include a specific factory's pollution or an inadequate municipal sewage treatment plant. Can be a "non-point" area, where pollutants wash off roads or where animal wastes or chemical fertilizers or combined sewer overflows (CSOs) that drain off the land into waterways and drinking water supplies.
