Table Bay Nature Reserve: Rietvlei Section
概览
The Table Bay Nature Reserve consists of seven management sections, including Rietvlei, Zoarvlei, Milnerton Lagoon, Milnerton Racecourse, Diep River, Parklands Fynbos Corridor, and the Coastal Section. It covers about 880 hectares of diverse habitats ranging from riverine floodplains, permanent and seasonal wetlands, open pans, a tidal estuary and coastal dunes.
The vegetation mainly consists of endangered Cape Flats dune strandveld and critically endangered Cape Flats sand fynbos. The nature reserve lies on the Table Bay coastline, stretching from close to the city centre to the north of Parklands.
The Table Bay Nature Reserve offers a range of educational, recreational and water sports opportunities:
-Watch birds from board walks and enjoy two birdhides at the Rietvlei Section
-Braai and picnic on Rietvleis shoreline
-Bring school groups for environmental education programmes
-Paddle and canoe at the Milnerton Lagoon and Rietvlei Sections
-Sail, ski and powerboat at Rietvlei
-Fish at selected sites
The Table Bay Nature Reserve protects over 400 plant species, 12 of which are threatened including Cliffortia ericifolia, Hermannia procumbens sp. procumbens, Leucadendron levisanus and Acrolophia bolusii.
One of the management sections, namely Milnerton Racecourse, has the largest known population of Lampranthus stenus. It also conserves the largest number of succulents (Mesembryanthemaceae and Aizoaceae).
The Table Bay Nature Reserve has approximately 200 bird species, including large flocks of flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus), as well as numerous migrating wading birds. During spring and summer, migrant birds arrive from the northern hemisphere, such as the curlew sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) that travels 13 000 km to arrive at Table Bay Nature Reserve.
About 30 mammals are known to occur in the reserve including Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis), Cape grysbok (Raphicerus melanotis) and caracal (Caracal caracal). Some frog species that can be found include the clicking stream frog (Strongylopus grayii), the Cape river frog (Amietia fuscigula) and the common platanna (Xenopus laevis). There are also large populations of fish in the deep water lakes and the Milnerton lagoon area.
