Construction on the Gateway Arch was finished in 1965, and since then it has stood before the Mississippi River, welcoming all who approach Missouri from the east. It is the main attraction of Jefferson National Park in Missouri, and it is arguably the main attraction for visitors to the city. Underneath the Arch is a small museum that teaches about Missouri's early heritage, and adventurous visitors can ride an elevator from the base of The Arch to the top for a view of St. Louis and the surrounding area. As well, the park that surrounds the Arch is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi River or have a picnic on the grass.
