Chazzer Market
概览
It no longer exists. There is no sign of its existence either.
This intersection, known as Pig Market, served as an outdoor hiring hall. Because of the seasonal nature of the garment industry, Jewish tailors gathered here during off seasons in the hope of picking up jobs. Hester St (and Orchard St) was also famous for its pushcarket market.
"At the turn of the 20th century, Hester street was synonymous with 'the ghetto', or the 'Tenth Ward,' or as Jacob Riis called it, 'Jew Town'. The Chazzar Market teamed with pushcarts where Jewish peddlers (schleppers) sold a variety of goods from fruit to bandannas, at bargain prices. Historically, a center for Ashkenazi (decending mostly from Eastern Europe) Jewish Immigrant culture, Hester street also attracted other immigrant groups seeking bargins, creating a brash, multi-national bazaar that could only exist in New York at the time" Wililam Hayes, City in Time: New York
