Our Mission:

Building Cleveland by Design aims to change the way Cleveland is built. It envisions a city where developers make design a first consideration, where citizens demand the best available design ideas, and where buildings exist in harmony with the environment.

Our Guiding Principles:

Aesthetics. Because design can play a vital role in retaining current residents and attracting new ones, BCbD aims to capitalize on Cleveland’s rich urban fabric and position the city as an international leader in quality design.

Sustainability. Believing that cities must contain enduring buildings and infrastructure that are healthy for people and the planet, BCbD encourages new developments to use quality materials and green building practices, and to reuse historic fabric where appropriate.

Complexity. The variety of visual styles found in buildings and public spaces inspires creative expression, and contributes to urban arts and culture. BCbD stands behind neighborhoods that reflect their particular setting and offer rich detail, never simply imitating other places.

Cohesiveness. BCbD aims to connect developments with each other and with nearby public spaces without compromising their individual identities.
