Moraenae market is a local market located in Gu-wol dong, Incheon. The name of "Moraenae", which means sand in Korean has two origins. At first, it is presumed to be a modification of the pronounciation of mountain's Chinese character, Moe. Second, there is speculation that it represents the component of 'Moraenae', which is made of sand. Unlike nowdays, Guwol-dong was a slum until 1890s. Since then, as people exchanged objects they needed, Moraenae market developed into a local market. Moraenae market was established in 1985 and led urbanization of Guwol-dong. Moraenae market is the place where the culture and the sentiment of local residents exist. It is a place where you can feel the joy of people which is hard to be found in a large mart, and collect the people and make transactions between the communities. With the development of Guwol-dong, it has grown into the largest market in Incheon, selling vegetables, fish and fruits and directly affecting our daily lives. Moraenae market was hit by a demolition in 2003, but it started to develop again in 2007. There are many chain stores using onnuri vouchers, and are making efforts to make their own characters and products. It is an organized market using unified signs and arcades.
