국명 : 붉은배새매
영명 :chinese sparrow hawk
학명:Accipiter soloensis

몸길이는 수컷이 30㎝, 암컷이 33㎝이다. 몸 윗면은 푸른색을 띤 회색이고, 가슴은 흐린 주황색이며 아랫배는 흰색이다. 날개 밑부분은 옅은 색으로 무늬가 없으며, 끝은 검다. 납막은 주황색이다. 수컷의 눈은 어두운 붉은색이며 먼 거리에서는 검게 보인다. 가슴과 배에는 흐린 분홍색을 띤 갈색의 무늬가 있지만 암컷보다 밝게 보인다. 암컷의 눈은 노란색이다. 어린 새의 눈은 노란색이다. 가슴과 배에 밤색의 굵은 세로줄이 있고, 옆구리에 약간의 가로줄이 있다. 날 때 아랫면의 날개덮깃에 줄무늬가 없다. 둘째날개깃 아랫면의 줄무늬는 3개이다. 유사종인 조롱이는 노란색 눈테가 있으며, 날 때 아랫면의 날개덮깃에 가는 줄무늬가 있어 이 종과 구별된다. 유사종인 잿빛개구리매의 수컷은 허리가 흰색이라 이 종과 구별된다. 천연기념물 제323호로 지정되어 있다. 전국적으로 흔하게 번식한다.
