Overview

The Cradle of Humankind - a world heritage site - covers 47 000 hectares of land mostly privately owned and comprises a strip of a dozen dolomitic limestone caves containing the fossillised remains of ancient forms of animals, plants and most importantly, hominids. Cave sites within this area have produced over 850 hominid fossil remains, so that to date they represent one of the world's richest concentrations of fossil hominid bearing sites.
The Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves visitor centres are the official visitor centres to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.
There are over 400 different attractions within the area ranging from nature areas, to accommodation and business facilities.
The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is a sanctuary for nature lovers - with rocky highland grasslands, sweeping savannahs and mosaic bushveld intertwined with montane and freshwater aquatic habitats. Untouched and unspoilt, this pristine environment is renowened for its remarkable diversity of bird, animal and plant species.
