Esse has been pioneering organic skincare for 12 years. Our products aim to optimise skin health and slow ageing.

Your skin is an ecosystem. There are more than 10 microbes for every human cell in your body and they contribute more genes responsible for your survival than your own cells do. Esse uses prebiotics and probiotics to optimise your skin’s microbial ecosystem and minimise the effects of ageing.

Esse is certified organic by Ecocert and accredited by PhytoTrade Africa. PhytoTrade is an organisation that oversees the sustainability of wild harvested African plants and ensures fair trade practices. Esse is also cruelty-free and is endorsed by both PETA and Beauty Without Cruelty.

We use Baobab, Marula, Kalahari Melon and a myriad of other African extracts to deliver results on skin. Our extracts and oils are sourced from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Ghana, Swaziland, Zambia, Angola, Rwanda and Congo. This plant diversity is an enormous resource and has already yielded many new actives for skincare and several pharmaceuticals. Our plants are, however, under considerable threat from vastly increased human pressure on the environment, invasive alien plants and unsustainable harvest to supply the local “muthi” market. We are making an effort to retain genetic diversity of plants that are under particular threat. 2% of our net profit is directed toward growing threatened plants from seed and maintaining populations of these plants.

We are also very conscious of how our raw materials are sourced. The community projects that harvest many of our raw materials from the wild are externally monitored to ensure sustainability. These projects have given the bushveld a commercial value to the local people and will help to protect these vast tracts of pristine land.

We have adopted a Cradle to Cradle philosophy in our approach to sustainability. We view the product itself as a biological nutrient. This means that we will ensure that our products are freely and rapidly biodegradable and will be used as food by the ecosystems that they end up in. We view our packaging as a technical nutrient and we hope to reach the point soon where all the materials that are used to contain our products will be endlessly recyclable as packaging – not as some low-value downcycled material.

We have focused on the following issues in our effort to reduce our footprint on the planet – carbon load, biodiversity preservation, social responsibility and pollution.

We aren't perfect yet – but we are committed to the pursuit of having a net positive impact on our planet.
