Peel's Honey as established in 1924 and is the oldest honey label in South Africa. Our best known products are our creamed honey and our peanut brittle.

Peel’s was originally owned by Mr Jack Peel and his wife Doris. The business was bought and expanded greatly by Mr John Smith and his wife Faye, who established the brand and named it Peel’s. John Smith sold his honey directly to the public from his old truck which he parked on the old Durban/Johannesburg main road. This then became a rudimentary farm stall and is currently the land mark shop on the N3 freeway between Pietermaritzburg and Howick.

Doris Peel left the peanut honey brittle recipe with the Smiths and it has since been perfected and become very popular. The honey brittle range has been expanded and uses honey as a basic ingredient.

The Kennard family has owned the business since 2007 and has expanded the product range and volume even further.

Most of our honey is purchased from other South African beekeepers, but we do run our own hives locally in KwaZulu-Natal and the Orange Free State.

Our Process:

Purchasing bee hives in the flat and assembling at Peel’s. This involves wiring, waxing, nailing, baiting, dipping in wood preservative, strapping and hanging of these prepared bee boxes in the saligna plantations to catch migratory swarms of bees.

Placing the full hives on secure sites near to a nectar source. Placing extra supers (smaller boxes in which the bees store honey) on the brood boxes for the honey to be stored.

Harvesting the full supers of honey and taking to the extracting facility where honey is removed form the frames. The frames have to be unsealed and then placed in a centrifugal honey extractor.

The extracted honey is tapped into large settling tanks and allowed to clarify before being tapped into barrels.

These containers are then delivered to Peel’s factory for processing.

All of our honey goes direct from the bee hive to the bottle on the shelf.
