John Witherspoon Woods
40 acres
John Witherspoon Woods includes 40 acres of old growth forests, numerous streams, old stonewalls, and a field of diabase boulders. Mature beech trees and beautiful wildflowers, including the spring-blooming Trout Lilly, are found throughout the preserve. John Witherspoon Woods’ most interesting feature is Devil’s Cave, a formation created by very large boulders, located in the area’s northern portion. As the trails take hikers down into Mountain Lakes Preserve, they cross along babbling streams and a rock waterfall, through wetlands filled with the native Skunk Cabbage. John Witherspoon Woods sits within the Greater Mountain Lakes Open Space Area, and its trails are maintained by Friends of Princeton Open Space.
Location: Visitors can access John Witherspoon Woods from Mountain Lakes Preserve, off Mountain Ave, or through a separate parking area off Cherry Hill Road.
