Bread for the City has developed this farmland in Beltsville, MD, called City Orchard. The farm was created in conjunction with the University of the District of Columbia as a research farm to develop unique crops and new farming styles. The main crops are fruits such as blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries. However, they also grow various vegetables and rice. Locals are encouraged to come out to the orchard daily and volunteer their time to help harvest. The crops, which add up to over 45,000 lbs of fresh fruit, are sent to Bread for the City pantries for free distribution among needy D.C. residents. Not only is picking the fruit (and eating a few berries along the way) a fun time, it is also helping out a great cause!
