This park is a sculpture-centric institution and a stunningly beautiful patch of green on the edge of Long Island City. Socrates Sculpture Park boasts sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and a rotating exhibition series, which has featured the work of such celebrated artists as Cy Twombly and Mark Di Suervo, as well as a strong commitment to emerging artists, who cut stone and hew metal in Socrates’ on-site studio space. The park’s current stature is even more impressive when considering its humble beginnings as an abandoned riverside landfill and illegal dumpsite until 1986 when a grassroots collation of artists and community members, under the leadership of artist Mark di Suvero, transformed it into an open studio and exhibition space for artists and a neighborhood park for local residents. To sustain its commitment to the community that envisioned it, the organization offers a variety of free events, including its popular summer film series.

Socrates Sculpture Park's mission is to provide artists with opportunities to create and exhibit large-scale work in a unique environment that encourages strong interaction between artists, artworks and the public. The park's existence is based on the belief that reclamation, revitalization and creative expression are essential to the survival, humanity and improvement of our urban environment. Today it is an internationally renowned outdoor museum and artist residency program that also serves as a vital New York City park offering a wide variety of public services.

Socrates is open 365 days a year from 10am until sunset. Office hours: Mon-Fri 10am-6pm
