Kerem HaTemanim is the small Yemenite quarter abutting the famed Shuk HaCarmel. Built in the late 19th century by Yemeni immigrants, the neighborhood is one of the Tel Aviv’s oldest actually predating the incorporation of the city. As one of the largest Yemenite communities in the Middle East, the Kerem is known for Yemini soul food, connecting the immigrant community back to their homeland. Of the famed Yemenite specialties, marak teimani (Yemenite soup) is the dish of most renown. Alongside the overflowing bowl, diners are served scoug and the Yemenite specialty hilbe, a spice based condiment made from fenugreek seeds. At Medina the locals whip up an especially nostalgic rendition of the dish, and insist you eat it while still piping hot, rushing to fill refill your bowl once finished like a worrisome old world mom. 18 Mallan Street, Tel Aviv; Mon-Thurs 8 AM- 4:30 PM, Fri 8 AM- Shabbat; $ cash only
