Knockhill Racing Circuit.

In the 1970s Tom Kinnaird, a sheep farmer who owned South Lethans Farm on the slopes of Knockhill, sat one day on the hillside and looked over the 200 acres of his land. Tom was an enthusiastic motorcycle racing fan and as he surveyed the contours of the fields he could visualize a road racing circuit.

Up to this time Tom had enjoyed visiting various amateur race meetings all over Scotland. In the main, these were held on ex-wartime RAF airfields or Council Public Parks where service roads were used as the track.
Tom decided to turn his dream into reality. By linking a narrow service road to a disused railway line and returning it to the service road a demanding layout of twists, turns, drops and climbs created an ideal track 1.3 miles (2 km.) long and 10 metres wide. The circuit also had a 200 feet (61 m.) variation in its topography.

In 1983 the circuit was purchased by Derek Butcher, a successful Fife businessman. Since that time the circuit has gone from strength to strength and is now considered to be the UK’s premier race venue outside of Grand Prix Formula One racing. Events include the British Touring Car and British Superbike Championships. An innovation occurred in August 2003 when a Music Festival held on the circuit starred the internationally-acclaimed group, Status Quo.
