Barre Harbor Cottage
Overview
Barre Harbor Cottage
Queen Anne Style
Built in 1898 for $6,000 (Robert Emery, building contractor) as the waterfront summer residence of Captain Joseph Barre. Its 12 rooms were trimmed in natural oak. The house is 2 1/2 stories covered in gray clapboard, with a one-story porch on the front. Originally there was a rounded porch on the northeast corner, now replaced by a modern glass solarium. On the northwest corner is an octagonal tower with a conical roof.
People: This land was one of several bayside properties owned in 1889 by a Methodist pastor, the Rev. Dr. Edward C. Curtis, who was also a town booster. Until 1894, Curtis was president of the Methodist-run Atlantic Highlands Association which first promoted the area as a religious camp-meeting ground and bought extensive lands for the purpose. In 884, he founded the monthly newspaper, Atlantic Highlands Register.
