Old St. Patrick's Cathedral
Descripción
Old St. Patrick's - so called to distinguish it from the 1878 cathedral on Fifth Avenue - was the first Catholic cathedral in New York State and the second Catholic church in the city. It was founded in 1809, dedicated in 1815, burnt in 1866, and rebuilt in 1868. During that period, Catholicism in the City was experiencing astonishing growth. From the beginning, however, Irish Catholics were objects of suspicion, bigotry, and active aggression. In the earliest years, school were the responsibility of religious institutions.
The historic research contained in this Open Green Map is from the book: "Six Heritage Tours of the Lower East Side" by Ruth Limmer, in collaboration with NYC's Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
