The almost hidden church holds a bust of Cardinal Patrick Hayes who was an outstanding example of how Irish American immigrants fought their way to success in America. Born to immigrant parents in a slum neighborhood in 1867, he was orphaned by the age of four but later became the cardinal of the Archdiocese of New York City. His success story was similar to other Irish Americans who sought mainly to rise through society via religion the police department, and sometimes, politics.

The historic research contained in this Open Green Map is from the book: "Six Heritage Tours of the Lower East Side" by Ruth Limmer, in collaboration with NYC's Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
