Starbucks has achieved some degree of sustainability in offering coffee purchased through a farmer cooperative that ensures sustainable land use and equitable wages. They also provide health insurance to a large percentage of their employees. These practices are deployed broadly through a global corporate structure that allows them to play a larger role in determining market practices. They offer quite a convincing argument for the notion that small steps made by a large organization are more effective at creating positive change than large steps made by a local company.
