Southwest High School has a heat pump system for heating and cooling.
Supported by the Lincoln community, ground was broken in the fall of 2001 for Lincoln Southwest High School, the first new school in Lincoln, Nebraska since 1968. As part of the districtís strategic plan, Southwest High School helped meet the facility requirements for the growing Lincoln community.
Using the National Association of Secondary School Principals document, Breaking Ranks (1996), six basic themes were used in planning infrastructure that is now Southwest High School. The six themes included personalization, coherency, time, technology, professional development, and leadership.
As the doors opened in August of 2002, 1150 students in grades 9-12 and 77 teachers began the inaugural school year. Operating on a 4 X 4 block schedule, advisement was also part of a student's daily schedule. Parents and the Southwest Lincoln community have been, and continue to be, an active part of the high school.
Located on 74 acres adjacent to Wilderness Park, Southwest High School offers students the unique opportunity to experience the outdoor classroom. Students also have the opportunity to accelerate through curriculum or remediate if necessary.
