In June 2009, the Department of Transportation completed the City’s goal of building 200 bike-lane miles in all five boroughs. This took just three years, and brought New York’s total bicycle infrastructure to over 620 lane miles citywide! Keeping the City moving in an environmentally-sustainable manner, NYCDOT has pioneered award-winning bicycle facility designs seen all over the streets as well as on the annually published Bike Map. Secure bicycle parking is a current goal - now there are more than 8,700 sidewalk bicycle racks. All of these efforts have given a big boost to cycling. Cycling for transportation (rather than just recreation) has increased by 66% over the last two years, and its getting safer all the time. NYCDOT has also distributed thousands of bike light sets and almost 30,000 bicycle helmets. Visit the website to find out more about pedestrian and other improvements!
