History of this Location
This trail was originally used by the Guaiana Indians in the 18th century. It was also the best route to move gold found in Mina Gerais to the port of Paraty, where it would be taken to Portugal by boat. In the 19th century, it was used to transport coffee. When rail transport was established in 1888, the road was abandoned. It is now a historic feature of Brazil's national park system. Hiking and horseback riding are easily accessible to visitors.
