Originally called Biscayne Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park is a 1.6 acre park adjacent to the North Port Library.Bird at veterans park General Development Corporation presented the City of North Port with the deed to the park on June 11, 1976.
While under the ownership of General Development Corporation, the Men’s Garden Club of North Port Charlotte maintained the park as a club project. There are two memorials located near the main entrance to the park behind the waterfall. The larger of the two is a monument that was erected on May 26, 1986 by American Legion Post 254, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8203, Jewish War Vets, Marine Corps, US Coast Guard and Citizens of North Port in honor of the men and women who served their country in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The other is a globe shaped metal sculpture built by the Boy Scouts Troop 257 with support from several community businesses, local organizations and the City’s Planning Department in memory of those who perished in the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Every year residents come to this park for the Memorial and Veterans Day ceremonies.

The pond/fountain area of the park is a great place to read a book and relax. Bench seating is located along the pathway with five varieties of Palm trees and a dozen different tree types including Live Oak, American Elm, Red Cedar, and Mahogany located within the park.
This site has been recognized for its Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ practices. The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ program recognizes the use of environmentally friendly garden gardening and landscaping practices. Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ minimizes the use of potable water for irrigation, avoids the runoff of excess fertilizers and pesticides from the landscape and provides habitats for wildlife. They can take any form, from more conventional and manicured to more natural. It’s how you maintain your yard that ultimately determines if it’s Florida-friendly. NESTs are voluntary associations of people – neighbors, civic groups, student organizations and others – who want to better understand and improve environmental conditions in their watershed. Sarasota County can help you create your own NEST, or you can join one that already exists, based on your ideas and interest.
