Among the oldest domesticated trees in Squamish, the butternut trees were planted in 1906 by Fred Thorne who ran a 260-acre hop farm at the location. Agriculture was of great importance to the early days of Squamish and the butter nut trees remain as a reminder of the hop industry which once flourished.
