About Velo City Bike Tours NYC

Acerca del Mapa Verde Abierto

Velo City's mission is to introduce youth from diverse, underserved communities to urban planning and design concepts, community involvement opportunities, and career options in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning and design. Through cycling, Velo City's participants will experience a safe, healthy, and sustainable way to explore the City's built environment and access its open spaces. "Bikesplorations" is Velo City's summer pilot program that is based out of the East River Park. Youth from the neighborhood explore their community through Velo City's cycling-based planning education program. The bikes, NY 400 Batavus orange bicycles generously donated by the Dutch government, have been made available to Velo City's participants by our fiscal sponsor, Recycle-A-Bicycle. In the summer of 2010, Velo City had 9 youth participate in Bikesplorations. The theme of this year's 7 week Bikeplorations summer program was public space and how to get youth involved in discussions surrounding access to public spaces such as parks and waterfronts while learning how urban design promotes environmental sustainability in our cities. This map features the public spaces throughout the Lower East Side that Velo City's Bikesplorers rolled through this summer which include: East River Park, Hester Street Market, Allen Street Mall and Battery Park. If there are any other public spaces in the Lower East Side that you think we should consider exploring for next year's Bikesplorations program, let us know!
