This garden, was created on the block where a historic public "Colored School #115" once stood. Schoolhouse Garden commemorates the struggles African Americans went through to obtain a good education. #115 opened in 1889 and closed in the late 1950's. The garden was funded by Waverly Main Street, designed and constructed by Civic Works. Its creation involved 100 volunteers, donating 300 hours of work. Schoolhouse Garden provides a gateway between the Waverly Farmers Market and Greenmount Avenue Shopping District. The pathways are lined with stones saved from the 25 tons of rubble removed from the site.
