In English and German (German see below / Deutsch siehe unten)

Umbrella House, a squat named for its formerly leaky roof. Once known as UN House for its ethnic diversity. Got legal tenancy in 2002. The building is called the Umbrella House because of the early days when inhabitants used umbrellas indoors. Cinderblocks disguised by orange paint block the former storefront space, and the ubiquitous three-dollar black umbrellas, painted yellow, green and white as if some part of a community project, hang from the fire escapes.

____________German (Deutsch)___________

This is total bullshit. We never used umbrellas in the building because of the leaky roof. It was named Umbrella House because we planned to form an Umbrella organization for all the squats in the Lower East Side at that time. That fell flat on its ass when the inhabitants of Umbrella House ended up in an internal power struggle - and if you can't unite a building, how can you unite a neighborhood?
